Leap Day 2012 Party

Happy Leap Day!

Have you ever wondered why every fourth year has 366 days instead of the standard 365?  Not only will I tell you why and how Leap Year came to be, but I’ve also got a fantastic Leaping Scavenger Hunt for you!

It was the ancient Egyptians who first figured out that the solar year and the man-made calendar year didn’t quite match up. Why the difference?  Simple. In actuality, it takes the Earth slightly longer than a year to travel around the Sun – 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds to be exact.

As the hours accumulated over the centuries, an extra day was occasionally added to the calendar and over time the practice became more or less official.  Although the Romans are credited with first designating Leap Day, the more precise formula we use today was adopted in the 16th century when the Gregorian calendar fine-tuned the calculations.  The Rule of Thumb:  Leap or Intercalary Day occurs in years divisible by four but never in a year divisible by 100 except those also divisible by 400. Go figure!

In honor of Leap Day, Suzy has a great scavenger hunt for you.  Leap around SuzyQ Scraps to find the six products featured.  Be certain to give names specifically – include kit, add-on, cluster (etc) designations.  Simply email your answers to admin AT suzyqscraps DOT com before 11:59 pm EST on March 2nd.  Please type LEAP YEAR PARTY in subject line and don’t forget to include your name and contact information in your email.  Check back here on March 8th to see if you’re the lucky winner of $10 to Suzy’s store!
