Looking Forward by Looking Back

As we approach 2012 many people will think about their resolutions for this new year. I think the phrase “New Year’s Resolution” has become a negative to most people, when it should really be a positive thing. Instead I think of my “goals” for the coming year….what I want to accomplish, things that need more attention, and where to focus my energy.

Most importantly, I make sure that I’m not setting myself up for failure. Setting goals that are achievable is crucial. For 2011 my goal was more organization for the family as a whole. I recorded the why & how in this page:

I am not happy to admit that I made it purely for my QT requirements. I probably would have never made this page if Suzy hadn’t created the digital scrapbooking kit I used, Finding Balance. And she wouldn’t have created it if she hadn’t selected Balance as her word of the year for 2011. Funny how things work out, right? But I’m so thankful that it all came to be, because this page made me realize the importance of recording thoughts and goals. Being able to see this page and remember what I was thinking at the beginning of the year is a gift. I probably would have forgotten all about these feelings somewhere around March! In a way writing this goal down made it more important, and I think in a way held me accountable.

I’m happy to report that my goal for 2011 was mostly realized. I can’t say that we achieved perfect balance and organization, but our family does run much more smoothly than it did last year. It’s only fitting that I made a follow-up page, using A Life Expressed {Peacefully},  to report our progress! I think having these pages in our yearly family album will be a wonderful addition and I now plan to do this every year.

Will you join me in recording your goals for 2012? Take a moment to jot down a few realistic, attainable goals for 2012 and make a layout. I’d love to see your page so leave a link to it in the comments. Happy New Year!!
