Tutorial | Digital Paper Piecing

Final

Have you seen those amazing paper piecing projects in the traditional industry or even in the digital world and wonder how to do it in your computer?  I hope so, because I am here to show you how. Do not get discourage for the amount of steps, I wanted to make sure I cover even the simplest steps.

Below is an example of a card where the images were digitally paper pieced.

credits for the congratulations card: iGrow Collab kit by SuzyQ Scraps and Ziggle Designs, Digital Stamps: Wedding by SuzyQ Scraps

Supplies:

I will be using Photoshop CS5, but these same steps can be applied using other software and versions.

TIP: Sometimes selections are too small and instead of adding Inner Glow it is easier to use your Burn Tool and pick a small soft brush and burn the edges to add the shadow.

Your image is now ready to use.  You can save it as a layered file so you can just clip new papers to the layers and give it a fast new look in just seconds or merge the layers and use it for your next project.

Hi Dalis, Thank you so much for this! I’m new to CS3 and I ALWAYS appreciate tutorials…bring ‘um on! May I ask…step 2 why should you not resize the original brush or stamp before proceeding? I’m actually understanding all the words you’re using (amazing!), but I may have questions as I try this. Thank you again. A really great tutorial.

Great Question Connie, sorry I didn’t answer it in the tutorial. The reason you want to keep it as BIG as possible is that remember images can be later resized to smaller sizes without affecting the looks of it. If you started with a small size and then you decided that not only you wanted to use it for a hybrid card but for a layout you would need to increase the size of it. When you increase the size of it you would get a really ugly pixelated image. So to be safe always start big and then you can make it smaller, but never the other way around.

If you have any other questions just ask!
