Video Tutorial | Coloring In Your Digital Stamps

digital scrap banner tutorial

The mini kit add-on to my new digital scrapbook kit Achievement includes a graduation cap digital stamp so you can color it to match your graduate’s school colors. Watch this video to see how. (And be sure to stop by tomorrow for a video on recoloring digital scrapbook embellishments.)

If you like to read tutorials with screen shots, check out this step-by-step tutorial I did for The Daily Digi about how to color in your doodles & digital stamps.

And here’s a little freebie that coordinates with the new Achievement collection.

I realize in psds you can recolor the different parts of the stamps by way of recoloring layers , but with pngs, unless the designer cut the image into separate pieces (which they rarely do) we have to recolor the image as a whole or designers would have to make each stamp a mini template with multiple layers saved as png files. This means if we recolor it , the image will be all one color ..outline ,inside, and every part.
This is why I don’t use the digi stamps, because most of them are to small or detailed to cut into parts..like the cap. I can cut the tassel off and recolor it ,maybe, but I can’t separate the outline from the inside image , because the outlined edge is what defines the image. Designers don’t really consider this problem for png users by supplying an outline-free image mask seperate from the outline. Png users and their problems are often left out or ignored, because most designers assume everyone uses pse or ps and if they don’t then that’s their problem or too bad is the most common attitude. Present company is an exception ..lol. Most of the time, I just color the outline of the image and that’s it, but it would be fun to be able to recolor inside and out easily. Sometimes I place the recolored outline on paper and try to extract the image that way.

I’m sorry your program is limiting and doesn’t allow you to color digital stamps in this manner. That’d be so frustrating!

And I’m sorry that you feel designers assume everyone uses PS/PSE, or simply don’t care about customers like you who do not. I think the truth of the matter is that designers are very aware that not everyone uses PS/PSE. However, the majority of customers do. For the little amount that we charge for our designs compared to the amount of time spent designing (& everything that goes with it) we have to draw the line somewhere. We simply don’t have the time to create a product that works in every single program. And we shouldn’t have to, lol.

I might be wrong, but it seems to me that your current scrapbook program is stifling your creativity & limiting your ability to scrapbook how you want to. May I suggest switching to a program that would allow you to use a majority of the products on the market? Instead of feeling left out, you’d be free to grow your skills & try new things. Just a thought.

Wow! Just so clear and great information. You have a wonderful voice for teaching…and I love that you repeat your steps that are repeatable (like expand). I think I’m actually getting it. You’re terrific!

You’re right. I’m sorry Suzy that I offended you that was not my intention at all and I would dream of doing that to you or anyone else really. I would have addressed this matter through a pm, but since I made this regrettable comment publicly here and you replied here as well, then I should retract my comment here as well.

I meant to speak in general terms, but re-reading my post I see that as I was trying to express my “general” thought, at some point some nasty personal experiences I had with several different designers at different stores (when I was very new to digital scrapbooking about a year and half ago in response to some questions I had asked..) popped up in my head and I unconsciously allowed those feelings I had about those experiences creep into my statement and re-color (the main post was about recoloring…lol) my “general” comment into a “personal” comment. I wouldn’t have shared this comment, if I had realized the source of the feelings and comment came from. I’m sorry I made you feel you needed to defend designers. I know designers don’t have a lot of time and for the most part designers every where are wonderful, kind, and generous. I should have stated this, but I didn’t catch the mood change in my comment. The few designers I came across early on, did hurt my feeling ,because they did express those feelings of …” Designers don’t really consider this problem for png users… and Png users and their problems are often left out or ignored, because most designers assume everyone uses pse or ps and if they don’t then that’s their problem or too bad is the most common attitude.”.

My reason for not using digital stamps is true though. They don’t give png users a lot of options, but I wish they did or I could think of a way around the obvious problems. I do think most designers do assume that customers are pse/ps users and that is why most make their products for pse/ps users. They use those programs and most people do use those programs, so why wouldn’t they assume that their customers need files for these programs too and so they don’t even think about any other file needs. I understand that. 65% of the time, when I tell a designer that I would like to use their products ,but that I need the products in png files and would they be willing to do that, she yes. If she says no, I’m fine with that and it’s no biggie.

Well I have taken up way too much space and too much of your time and anyone else reading this. Thank you for being patient with me. Scrapbook designing is a business , that’s why I wondered why pngs weren’t always included to sell to more customers (in the beginning), but it’s a business with heart and I’m sorry that I heart yours.
    Have a good day!

,,,just watched this video today! It’s great -I sometimes forget just what my program will do, or I use a technique for one thing and forget to use it for something else.lol Your videos are very informative and easy to follow. Thanks so much.
