Here in the USA we’re celebrating our freedom and independence. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for this holiday, as my dad and my grandpa both served in the US military. My dad has taught me about sacrifice, devotion, respect, and love of country. I’ve always admired the care and reverence he gives to our flag, the touch of tears in his eyes as we sing the Star-Spangled Banner, and his dedication to serving both his country and his fellowman. Thank you, Dad … I will be forever grateful.

My dad’s last assignment brought him to Utah and we settled in a small community in Davis County. Every July 4th, several F-16s fly over our house on their way to a parade in Provo. We’ve made it a tradition to climb up on the roof, sometimes with Dad’s American flag and POW flag, and wave at the airplanes as they fly by. And we eat cinnamon rolls. The above picture was taken in 2007.

I’ve spent the last 3 years celebrating July 4th out in the middle of nowhere.
While I miss climbing up on the roof for the F-16 flyby, I really do love celebrating out here. One of the nearby small communities hosts a gathering with hot dogs, hamburgers, and ICE CREAM. Later we enjoy performances (mostly musical) by local members of the communities round about. And after that, when it gets dark, we do fireworks. The big kind, like at any awesome fireworks performance. There may not be as many, but there’s nothing like the boom of the cannon vibrating in your bones and the flare of color straight above your head as ashes fall down from the sky. Love it! I’ve been looking forward to it all week and will be on my way to celebrate soon.
So what traditions do you have for Independence Day?

Our traditions are going to our Cousins house, swimming, bbq, eat WAY TO MUCH, and then drive to go see fireworks. It’s a day full of fun!
I LOVED this blog post. Wow, I actually even got a little choked up. I know your photo on the roof was taken a few years ago, but OH-HOW-FUN!!!!! Both of the photos you shared are awesome!!!!
When you spoke of the flag and your conviction and love for our country, it just really moved me. We, too, are the same way…
