My birthday is Monday (yay, I’ll be 28!) and I’ve been thinking a bit how excited I used to get for my birthday when I was a kid. My parents helped us feel super special on our birthday. It was our day — Mom would make us our favorite dinner (sometimes we even got to go out to eat) and we wouldn’t have to do any chores. Usually, we siblings would try to be extra nice to the “birthday girl” or “birthday boy” on their day. I remember spending weeks thinking of the perfect gift to buy my siblings when it was their birthday, and eagerly watching as they opened it, wanting to see their first reaction.
I think some of that birthday excitement has been lost over the years, maybe because I’m the mom now, and I don’t get a day without chores, lolol! Or maybe it’s because I haven’t been surprised by my birthday present for 4 years — I’ve known what I was getting because I had to pick out what color I wanted, or the style I wanted, etc.
So, tell me, what birthday traditions do you have in your family? And what do you do (if anything) to make birthdays as special for adults as for the kids?

Happy happy early birthday!! It’s not much but to make birthdays special and unique, I usually come up with a theme based upon the number of years. i.e. 28 pieces of the person’s favorite types of candy wrapped together for their 28th birthday, 29 dollars on a gift card for the 29th birthday, etc.
I’ve scrapped that! lol http://www.polkadotplum.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3984&ppuser=619
we usually have birthday parties when we were young. now that we have married and my siblings have their kids, we just greet happy birthday and buy cake and candles for blowing =)
